Fifth Custom Rifle

April 2023

I had puchased the action early in 2020 but it sat idle until time allowed for the project. Somewhere along the way a barrel and stock were ordered. The reamer had been puchased previously but I was still torn on caliber even after ordering the barrel. So many options, so little time.

The CZ action presented new challenges. Not the least of which was cutting the extractor slot/groove for the Mauser style extractor. The Hornet being a cartridge that head spaces off the rim meant the extractor has to go beyond the rim to get under it and pull it out.

The best option I could come up with was to fabricate something to mount a Dremel tool on the tool post and then grind the slot into the barrel.

It was certainly a challenge but it worked

After some scope adjustments, things were looking better

The Hornet was not new and exciting for me since I bought my 1st one in 1987 but a new rifle to take to Montana had my interest. I might have preferred to build a 17 Hornet but there just is very little brass available for it with no light at the end of the tunnel.
