1/32 Scale Slot Car Racing

962 Porsche Paint Project

The 962 was really simple to take apart. The bonnet just snaps off, the driver and headlight lenses just snap out. After priming and painting the body, I set to work on the bonnet. It was the trickier part of the project. I used spray paint for the car and did not have an exact match with which to brush on the painted areas of the bonnet. I know that you can spray excess paint into the plastic cap of a spray can and brush from there but I was afraid I would end up with brush marks. Instead, I used Ambroid EZ Mask and coated the entire bonnet. Then simply cut along the seams of the painted area and pealed off the mask. That made spraying it simple and it worked out very well, except for rushing the paint drying process a little too much. Be patient !

The yellow that you see around the edge of the glass is where the factory paint over sprayed beyond the areas of the bonnet that required paint. When I trimmed the mask off for painting, I followed the body lines exactly. Probably will be able to clean it up a little more.

I used flat black instead of gloss on the interior of the car for no other reason than I personally hate driving a real car with a shiny dashboard. It always seams to glare at the wrong time. The driver needed some attention. The helmet was not bad but the arms and hands were molded in orange plastic. I scrubbed the figure first with hot soapy water and a toothbrush, then painted the arms white and gloves red.

The wheel inserts do not particularly trip my trigger but I wanted to keep it original at least in structural appearance. I painted the rims gold and painted in just far enough to hide the black. I figure if I decide to take off the inserts, my options are still pretty open on wheel treatment.

The project was fun, relatively simple and good practice. I added 2 round neodymium magnets behind the rear axle and one just ahead of the motor. It drives like a different car. Of course what choice does it have, it's glued to the track. It's pretty fast for an old beater. I plan to exchange the magnets for weights and see if that does not have a pretty substantial effect too. I would rather use weight.

The last 2 pictures were taken seconds apart but the lighting had been adjusted. The actual color more closely matches next to the last picture, at least on my monitor.
